My first cake…

I wanted to take some time and talk about the first “official” cake I made. When I say my first cake I do not mean literally my first cake EVER. I mean that this is my first cake I have ever made with the intention of wanting to do this as a profession. So starts my journey…

I have decided to take the rest of the year off from college to pursue something that I have always dreamed of. Many of my friends and family think it’s a silly idea but I am at the stage in my life where I want to do something that truly makes me happy, and that is not sitting through hours of math or meetings at work, it is baking!

So I signed up for decorating classes! The classes began in September and will end the first week of December. I am so thrilled and I absolutely love everything about it! Now let’s get to it…

Things I learned in my first class:
1. THEY DON’T MAKE THEIR CAKES FROM SCRATCH!! – This absolutely shocked me! They use Duncan Hines cake mix (which I later learned is partnered with Wilton, so that would explain the brand pushing).
2. THEY BRING THEIR EGGS TO ROOM TEMPERATURE BEFORE ADDING TO THE BATTER. – This one still kind of makes me nervous but I have noticed a difference since doing this.
3. HOW TO SMOOTH A CAKE- Clouds parted…angels sang…it was MAGICAL. Using a VIVA paper towel and a little patience I am slowly mastering the smooth cake. When I get a little better I will do a post on this!

To finish out the class we practiced borders, and transferring of images using piping gel! I hope to one day look back at this cake and be proud of how far I have come…

  1. What a delightfully charming, cake, Sierra. It looks like a celebration, perhaps a celebration of your dream. Yes, your dream is coming true–one class at a time, one blog post at a time, one new friend/follower at a time. You’ll be so glad you listened to your heart and mustered your courage to go forward and make your dream happen. Never, ever give up. Please let me know when your social media connections are up and running. I will be very happy to friend/follow you and to help you connect some great friends/followers of mine.
